Marienbad lies in a beautiful wide valley in West Bohemia, 576 – 626 m above sea level. An almost 20 km wide strip of forest crisscrossed with numerous hiking trails passes right through the spa. Marienbad enjoys an excellent reputation around the world both for its treatment methods and effective natural curative resources, and for its picturesque, enchanting surroundings. Almost 100 cold springs have been discovered in and around the town, all with a high concentration of CO₂; some were discovered as early as the 16th century. A real pearl among the local neo-classical buildings is the spa colonnade erected in 1889; the spa district is dominated by the so-called ‘Singing Fountain’ which provides entertainment in the form of music and light performances.

The local springs have various chemical compositions; they contain CO₂ and traces of calcium, iron and magnesium. Mud and gas are also used in treatments. The spa specializes in the treatment of kidney, urinal and respiratory disease, musculoskeletal problems, diabetes, oncological problems and gynecological disorders.

Marienbad can boast the second oldest golf course in Europe founded by King Edward VII of England in 1905. There is also a mini golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools, saunas, solariums, fitness centres, a riding school, yachting, a sports equipment hire centre, angling, hunting, skiing, speedway and hiking, cyclingand cross-country skiing trails. Tourists can also visit the local museum with exhibitions on the town’s history, an open air geological park, the Fryderyk Chopin memorial, a theatre, cinema, concert hall, music venues, galleries, discotheques, casinos and amusement arcades as well as taking sightseeing flights over the town.
